First, the definition of a rare book is taken from a library & information science glossary and supplemented. Referring to the example of Japan’s National Diet Library, the criteria for designating books as rare are discussed, as is the handling of rare books in libraries. The second half of the article provides a brief explanation of Japanese old printed books and Western old printed books, including incunabula.
