Many of the corporate misdeeds were revealed by information provided by concerned persons within corporations.In Japan, Based on these circumstances, the Whistleblower Protection Act came intoforce (in April, 2006) in order to protect whistleblowers for ensuring that workers willnot suffer from disadvantages, such as dismissal, for disclosing information for public interest reasons, and in order to ensure that business enterprises comply with the laws and regulations concerning protection of people's lives and bodies and protection of consumers'interests.In addition, there have been established a guideline for the procedures when administrative institutions receive a report related to violation of laws and regulations from inhouse staff or an outsider, and a guideline for commercial business enterprises have been established (both in July, 2005).The following are the major points of the Whistle Blower Act: (i) Workers are protectedfrom suffering from disadvantages, such as dismissal for disclosing information forpublic interest reasons. (ii) The range of information to be provided by whistle-blowerscovers criminal and illegal acts in violation of the provisions of the laws related to thepeople's lives, bodies, and property. (iii) The institutions to which information is reported are classified into \"in-house bodies of corporations,\" \"administrative institutions,\" and \"other institutions outside corporations\". Conditions to protect whistleblowers are set for each institution to which information is reported.
