 note = {1955年はロックンロール元年の年ともいわれる。ビル・ヘイリーの《ロック・アラウンド・ザ・クロック》が大ヒットし、ロックンロール旋風が吹き荒れることになったからである。ヘイリーは1951年からの一連のレコーディングで、カントリーとリズム・アンド・ブルースの融合を目指していた。《ロック・アラウンド・ザ・クロック》は1954年にリリースされたが、この時はほとんど注目を浴びることもなかった。だが翌年、映画『暴力教室』で使われ、空前のヒットとなったのである。どうしてこのようなことが起きたのだろうか。その理由は、音楽それ自体に内在するというよりは、時代にあったといえよう。50年代前半のアメリカは戦後の好景気に沸き、マッカーシズムの「赤狩り」が猛威をふるった時代だった。ハイスクールは保守的なイデオロギーに封印され、ティーンエイジャーは高度に発展した資本主義経済がもたらした消費社会に投げ込まれた。こうした軋轢のなかで、《ロック・アラウンド・ザ・クロック》は世代の徴となり、その産声となったのだった。, 1955 is often mentioned as the birth year of rock 'n' roll.
